EUB Travel Insurance
Our story began in 1905, when Miksa Engel Cserkúti, a businessman from Pécs, observed how easily a suitcase could ignite from sparks emitted by a steam locomotive at the Lucerne train station. Upon investigation, he discovered the railway company offered only symbolic compensation for such damages.
This sparked the idea of establishing an insurance company specializing in covering travelers’ baggage and accident-related damages. Thus, in 1907, Hungary saw the birth of the European Goods and Baggage Insurance Ltd., the world's very first insurer dedicated to this specialty—predecessor of today's EUB.
Later, the Assicurazioni Generali insurance company acquired a majority stake, and some shares ended up in the hands of Münchener Rückversicherung, the world’s largest reinsurance company, paving the way for the European-wide network of the European Travel Insurance.
After the disruptions caused by World War II and subsequent nationalization, the company's activities in Hungary ceased for nearly four decades. It wasn't until 1989, with Generali’s return to the market, that traditional travel insurance sales resumed.
Exactly 90 years after its original foundation, on January 1, 1997, the independent European Travel Insurance Ltd. was established, continuing as Hungary’s sole insurance provider focused exclusively on travel insurance to this day.
